In the 2nd line in above picture, it is written that larva has 5 stages.

Does it mean larva, which is the second stage of life cycle, itself consists of 5 stages? So total 4+5=9 stages? Please explain.

  • Stages they undergo is only 4. But after each stage Moulting takes place. i.e. after each stage it has to cast off its cover (Skin). So in the text below it is mentioned as five stages.

  • @sathya Does only larva pass through 5 stages?

But total life cycle (from birth to death) has 4 stages?

  • @anag
The life cycle of silkworm completes in the following four phases: Egg: The female lays about 300 to 400 eggs in clusters upon mulberry leaves. ... Eggs turn into larva in 10 to 12 days. Larva: A silk moth passes through five stages during the larva phases of its life.
Larvalfive stages are called instars.first instar is grey in colour &body consists of 12segments.after4-5days it becomes inactive &moults.it moults several times.after each moults instar grows in size.the cocoon forms around the body of larva which produces sticky fluid & fluid dries.
