In organic chemistry, an activating group is simply any substituent that increases the reactivity of the organic compound while a deactivating group tends to decrease the reactivity of the organic compound.
A certain functional group is usually considered to be activating or deactivating can be either due to electronic (inductive or/ and resonance effect) or steric reasons.
