    Please explain how to solve this question. Why can't option a, c or d be the answer?



  • @anag in option A and D, u will get vicinal diols on hydrolysis... alcohols dont give 2,4 dnp test. In opt C, u will get two −OH-OHOH grps on terminal carbon so after removing H2OH_2OH2O u get aldehyde but they give tollen's test. In opt B u will get two −OH-OHOH grps on 3rd carbon which will form ketone after removing H2OH_2OH2O. Ketones give 2,4 dnp test but they dont give tollen's test.
