    In 2nd pic, it is written in 1st line that retentivity of soft iron is greater than that of Steel. In the last line it is written, soft iron has low retentivity.

    If a suitable material for core of electromagnet should have low retentivity, why isn't steel the suitable material? Steel has lower retentivity than soft iron. Please explain.



  • In electromagnetic coercivity also has a important role like retenvity
    High coercivity is not suitable for electromagnets
    They need low coercivity
    Thus soft iron are used



  • Soft iron has greater retenvity COMPARED to steel
    In general both have low retenvity than others
