  • If we have to find the mean of 1/2, 1/4, 1/6 & 1/8, should we find harmonic mean or arithmetic mean?

If the mean is given as =2(2×6)/(2+6), is this harmonic mean or arithmetic mean? Please explain.

  • If he didn't mention anything it should be arthimetic mean

  • @sola-harshith If the mean is given as =2(2×6)/(2+6), is this harmonic mean or arithmetic mean?

According to my calculation, arithmetic mean is (0.5+0.25+0.166+0.125)/4≈ 0.2 . So ans is not matching with ans given:3 . Please explain.

  • Referring to the example you have mentioned , The given answer is neither the arithmetic mean of those numbers and nor the harmonic mean.

As far as average velocity is considered, Average velocity is defined as the total distance divided by total time taken. In the given particular example where body covers equal distances with two different velocity the average velocity comes out to be harmonic mean of the two velocities. However it is not always the case and a more general method must be used to calculate the average velocity
