Mercury(II) chloride react with sulfur dioxide and water to produce mercury(I) chloride, hydrogen chloride and sulfuric acid.

    2HgCl2 + SO2 + 2H2O → Hg2Cl2 + 2HCl + H2SO4
The sulphuric acid produced further takes part in the reaction

Mercury(I) chloride react with sulfuric acid to produce mercury(II) chloride, mercury(II) sulfate, sulfur dioxide and water. Sulfuric acid - concentrated heated solution.

    Hg2Cl2 + 2H2SO4 → HgCl2 + HgSO4 + SO2 + 2H2O.

    HgSO4 is a yellow precipitate
